Case study

Blood analysis using optical fibers

Blood tests can help detect potential health disorders and diagnose diseases.

Fiber optics are ideal to perform fluorescence spectroscopy analysis. They allow to illuminate a sample of blood at a defined wavelength, and to collect the fluorescence emitted as a reaction to the excitation caused by the incoming light. The emitted fluorescence is relevant of the composition of the target, which allows to identify the nature of the target.

SEDI-ATI has been involved in this field for decades. We provide customer-specific bundle designs such as coherently mapped optical fiber assemblies consisting in multi-branched optical fibers that are arranged in a linear configuration at one end of the bundle which fans out into multiple legs with a single fiber in each. There is one leg per sample to test, and the array of fibers is aligned with the entrance slit of the spectrometer. Fiber bundles with core diameters from 50 µm to 1000 µm, and lengths to 20 m.

Product focus

Custom multimode fiber optic assemblies

SEDI-ATI offers custom multimode fiber optic assemblies such as bundles in straight, bifurcated (Y-cable), or octopus (fan-out) configurations. The fibers can be either random or coherently mapped.

Standard mechanical end pieces are either cylinders of 10 mm in diameter by 60 mm in length or 905 SMA connectors (3.17 mm ferrule). The end configurations can be either round, square, linear or any other geometry.

We offer fiber bundles with core diameters from 50 µm to 1000 µm, and lengths to 20 m, for light transmission in the UV-VIS or VIS-IR range.

Key features

  • customer-specific designs
  • multimode fibers with core diameters from 50 µm to 1000 µm
  • broad spectral ranges: UV-VIS or VIS-IR
  • end configurations: round, square, linear or other geometry
  • bundle: possibility of combining different fiber sizes
  • fan-out: single or multi-fibers per leg
  • array: matches the entrance slit of a spectrometer
