Life at SEDI-ATI

Season’s Greetings from SEDI-ATI

Dear all, year 2020 has been unusual in many ways.

We would like to thank you for your trust and strong support. We sincerely hope that you will conclude the year 2020 with the success and satisfaction that you were aiming for.

Despite the pandemic and a difficult year in 2020, SEDI-ATI Fibres Optiques met its objectives with a slight growth compared to 2019.

We send you our best wishes for the upcoming holiday period and wish you some quality time to relax and spend time safely with your family.

We look forward to meeting you again in 2021.

Case study

In-vivo breast cancer detection by fluorescence spectroscopy using an optical fiber needle

As part of breast cancer detection, a biopsy is performed to determine if the suspicious lesion is malignant.

This is a traumatic medical procedure for the patient. The examination is uncomfortable, can take up to an hour, and can cause painful consequences.

Besides, waiting for the results is long and stressful since it takes several days for the laboratory analysis.

Moreover, in nearly 80% of cases, the biopsies conducted reveal that the cells analyzed are not cancerous.

What if we could avoid the routine use of biopsy?
What if we could provide a diagnosis in real-time during the examination?
What if we could immediately reassure 4 out of 5 women?

SEDI-ATI is working on the design of a fiber-optic needle for the early diagnosis of breast cancer using an in-vivo fluorescence detection technique that does not require the addition of fluorochrome.

This would be a preliminary step that would be non-traumatic for the patient and would confirm or rule out the need for a biopsy.

Product focus

Fiber-optic needle probes

SEDI-ATI has acquired very specific know-how in the integration of an optical fiber into a metallic needle.

Fiber-optic needle probes are suitable for spectroscopy applications in the medical field and the food industry. They are also particularly adapted to invasive in-vivo protocols.

Because they can handle high power laser beams, fiber-optic needles can also be used as laser cutters for surgical or research applications where they will allow to cut tissues.

We have the ability to custom design the probe to fit the customer’s requirements. We can offer needles with a specific length and size. In the needle, we can introduce optical fibers with core diameters ranging from 200 µm to 600 µm. And we can terminate the probe with an SMA connector matching the required power level of the application.

Key features

  • hypodermic needle offering excellent tissue penetration; custom dimensions
  • USP Class VI certified, non-toxic and biocompatible material
  • optical fibers from 200 µm to 600 µm core diameters; custom lengths
  • SMA connector according to the power level
